Top tips for creating a great fire pit area

There’s nothing better than spending an evening in the garden, warmed by the gentle glow of a fire. Whether you are relaxing after a hard day at work or want to invite friends and family around for a social gathering, creating a comfortable and attractive fire pit area should be top of your list.

Pick the Right Fire Pit

Take a look at your garden and imagine your fire pit there. It’s important that you choose the right kind of installation for your space. If you have a smaller garden, you will probably be better off with a portable fire pit that you can put away when it’s not being used. You may well have enough space that means you can have a more permanent and perhaps larger installation that acts as a focal point for the garden.

You’ll also need to decide what kind of fuel you want to use. Wood fire pits look and sound fantastic. Gas fuelled burners are a lot easier to get going and simple to maintain. Take your time in making your choice and look at all the possibilities.

Deciding What You Want

It’s key to have a clear idea of what you want your fire pit area for. If it’s for entertaining guests and evening barbecues you might want to consider how you are going to keep everyone comfortable. Maybe you just want a personal space where you can sit down and relax, read a book or be closed off from the world.

Create a Great Outdoor Space

While your fire pit will be the central focus, you need to pay special attention to the surrounding area. What are you going to put there to make it look welcoming? If you have a decent sized space that is underused, now’s the time to create something attractive and memorable. For example, you can install seating around the fire pit, either using garden furniture or something more permanent like stone benches.

That’s not all, you need to decide what plants you’re going to have nearby. And are you going to introduce lighting to add more ambience? How about adding a pond feature which can catch the reflection of the fire as you sit and take in the atmosphere on a nice cool evening?

If you have the space, you’re only limited by your own imagination. A fire pit that is enclosed by stone cladding can look absolutely fabulous and certainly give you something to build around. You can opt to go for something that looks aged and natural or go for a more modern, perhaps Nordic approach. There are minimalist Japanese designs that you can draw on which provide the perfect mix of peace and tranquillity.

There are plenty of resources on line from which you can draw inspiration. Our advice is to take your time and look at all the options first. You may also want to get a landscape professional in to take an impartial look at your space and offer their suggestions. Creating a fire pit area of your garden can be a labour of love but what you end up with is a perfect reflection of your personality, the ideal location for social evenings and private contemplation.
